[WIP][Do not merge] First attempt to design Euler Mathbb N,Q,R,C,H. #21

Only design, kerning and spacing still need to be done and improvement in the number (and type) of points is necessary.

Please give me some feedback. Is the shape ok? Any advice? Any comment is welcome!

Hi,

While I am not a font designer (at all!), I did have a few discussions about this font with Herman Zapf when we first started this otf-math font, so I hope what I have to say is at least a little relevant. Based on how the original Euler font looks like drawing with a chalk stick on a blackboard, I would have expected a shape closer to my attached screenshot.

Your shapes look as if a chisel is used to remove the middle part of a single, very wide stroke. But ‘double struck’ implies two separate moves with the pen/chalk, so I believe it makes sense to have the two resulting stems simulate actual strokes — at least somewhat.

The screenshot is just a quick hack to demonstrate what I mean, not intended to be a final shape or anything. It is not even technically ‘nice’, but due to lack of experience it would take me many hours to fix the cure inflections and connection details. I hope you can still understand what I want to convey.

My 2 cents,

Taco

@tacohoekwater What you mean is that the double struck are right lines in this attempt, but you would expect more curvy ones since this is supposed to be hand-drown. Right? However note that replying by email does not allow to join screenshots (or any kind of file as a matter of fact), so there is none in your post.

Hi,

Yes, that is exactly what I meant. To be clear, I have put the screenshot in a temporary web location:

Best wishes, Taco

Hi, Here are some attempt to make it look more like a real handwritting. The C is "smoother" than the Q. Please tell me what you think about it. Squirrel

Hi squirrel,

That looks nice! I especially like the supporting stroke in the Q which has a bit of an internal stem curve to it (as well a being flared at both ends). That makes it appear more handwritten, and to me that looks very pleasing.

Nice work.

Taco
