Here you will find updates to the Kickstart Evaluation Project

What is this study about?

Kickstart Chemistry has been offering the spectroscopy module both physically in laboratories and virtually via video conferencing since early 2020. In this research study, we will investigate the similarities and differences between these two delivery modes for the spectroscopy module of the Kickstart Chemistry program.

We will explore various aspects of teaching and outreach from the perspectives of the high school students attending the spectroscopy lessons, the teachers accompanying these students, and the Kickstart Chemistry demonstrators who deliver these lessons either physically or virtually.

This study will help us understand more about the impact of various teaching delivery modes (face-to-face vs online) on students’ learning, their connection of chemical literacy with real-life and their aspiration for chemistry and science. This understanding will enable us to create better iterations of the programs in the future, which will provide a better Kickstart Chemistry learning experience.

Moreover, our understanding of the students’ perception and need compared and contrasted with the expectations of educators (such as teachers and demonstrators) will help us design better learning experiences for our students at the University of Sydney. Our understanding of the involvement of graduate-level demonstrators in our outreach programs will also enable us to provide them with a better environment in which they can confidently develop their teaching and communication skills.
