The Physics&Astronomy Major

• In recent years, students have combined the study of Physics with Mathematics, Economics, Electrical Engineering, and Chemistry. A large proportion of our graduating seniors go on to do graduate work in Physics at top-ranked institutions.

• Elementary Particle Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Astrophysics.

• The major in physics is divided into a core requirement plus all of the courses in one of five concentrations: Advanced Physical Theory and Experimental Techniques, Chemical Principles, Computer Techniques, Astrophysics, or Business and Technology.

• Core Courses: The following courses must be taken by all Physics majors, no matter what their concentration:

  Math 104, 114, 240, and 241

  Physics 150 or 170, Physics 151 or 171

  Physics 230, 250, 351, 361, 362, and 411.

  A second transformation of sorts took place at Penn after 1940, resulting in the University of today. During the Second World War, massive infusions of federal dollars made it possible for Penn to be a major contributor to the war effort. Immediately afterwards, the G.I. Bill paid for thousands more to attend the University. The size of Penn exploded after a national peacetime consensus developed during the 1950s and 1960s to use tax dollars to support basic research and University-based training. The University, which had graduated 301 students in 1890, graduated 5,634 in 1990

  • The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania began in 1881 when Joseph Wharton, an iron miner and a self-taught businessman, gave $100,000 to the University to found a "School of Finance and Economy," intending to, in his own words, "instill a sense of the coming strife [in business life]: of the immense swings upward or downward that await the competent or the incompetent soldier in this modern strife."

从1997年的物理学课表了解 Core Physics Courses

• The following courses must be taken by all physics majors, no matter what their concentration.

  A three-semester introductory sequence, either Physics 150/151/250 (regular) or Physics 170/171/270 (honors) covering classical and modern physics. Both sequences involve the same subject matter but the small-section honors courses cover the material with greater depth and rigor. With permission of the instructor a student may transfer from the regular to the honors sequence at the beginning of each course. Students electing the physics major after having completed Physics 1/2 may substitute these for Physics 150/151.

  Four semesters of mathematics (Math 140, 141, 240, and 241).

  One semester of electronics (Physics 364).

  Physics 351 (Classical Mechanics), Physics 361 and 362 (Electrodynamics, I and II), and Physics 411 (Quantum Mechanics I).

What is first principles?

The benefit of "first principles" thinking? It allows you to innovate in clear leaps, rather than building small improvements onto something that already exists. Musk gives an example of the first automobile. While everyone else was trying to improve horse-drawn carriages, someone looked at the fundamentals of transportation and the combustion engine in order to create a car.

Naturally Musk does give one warning about using first principles for innovating however, "it takes a lot more mental energy."
