I use thunderbird on my machine and I do not see this delay when opening emails.

Try running thunderbird from a terminal and see if any messages come out. The
plugin
while loaded should not be started unless the email is in HTML and contains a
video
link. Otherwise the plugin should not even be started. Also, what other plugins
do
you have installed.

kdekorte : thanks for replying !
Well, there's no output in the terminal. Indeed, the plugin shouldn't be started
considering the emails I read.
However, the issue is only triggered, here, if I use the config file I supplied
above
(did you try to create it and copy the exact same content ?).
The other plugins I have are : icedtea 1.7, flash 10.0 r45, skype buttons for
kopete.
Cheers !

So it only happens when you are compiling without gconf support?

Hmm, TB doesn't use gconf, does it ? Or maybe you are just refering to
gecko-mediaplayer ?
Please tell me if I can provide you with more information. I do not have the
time
right now to figure out how to recompile TB with the relevant options, but I
may be
able to do it in about 1 week and a half...
Thanks again !

I'm back ;-)
Hmm, the ~/.config/gecko-mediaplayer gets generated again once in a while. Which
slows down TB again until I remove it.
Please tell me what I can do to help :-)
Cheers !

You never answered the question if gecko-mediaplayer is compiled with or without
gconf support. I'm guessing without. Do you have a good reason not to use gconf?

Ok, I installed gecko-mediaplayer using --without-gconf. I setup my
gecko-mediaplayer.conf file like you have shown and neither of my IMAP accounts
are
showing any delay when I open an email. I am using Thunderbird 3.0.3
