Contributors guide is a bit out of date. #838

After the redesign/refactoring, some bits and pieces of the contributors' guide 
seem out of date. We should update it.

I spent about 3 hours yesterday trying to contribute. I can definitely attest 
to it being out of date. I was not successful in getting the local environment 
running so that I could write a new tutorial.

I updated the guide a few weeks ago after seeing raymond's post. That should 
bring things up to date.
