I've gone without a restart for quite some time now and it seems xcape was running amok, blocking all new X apps to be opened:

Maximum number of clients reached[*****:ERROR:browser_main_loop.cc(272)] Gtk: cannot open display: :0.0

after killall xcape everything started working as normal
