Differing session count for acquisition channel between web interface and API #654

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Name of affected component: Core Reporting API

Name of related library and version, if applicable (e.g. Java, Python,
HTTP, Objective-C, etc.): HTTP: Web vs API

Issue summary:

I am seeing different counts of sessions grouped by acquisition channel. In the
web interface, I'm seeing around 9000 sessions more categorized as social
instead of referral when compared to the results from the API.

Steps to reproduce issue:
1. Visit Acquisition > Overview within the GA web interface. Set dates to April
1, 2015 through April 30, 2015.
2. Note session counts.
3. Use Query Explorer to fetch the same data:
https://ga-dev-tools.appspot.com/query-explorer/?start-date=2015-04-01&end-date=
2015-04-30&metrics=ga%3Asessions&dimensions=ga%3Amedium
4. Note difference in session counts.

Expected output:

The 9000+ sessions categorized as social in the API results (instead of as
referral).

Actual results:

Session counts between the web interface and the API results differ, most
notably by 9000 sessions appearing to be incorrectly categorized in the API
results.

Notes:

I've attached a screenshot of the channel grouping settings. They appear to be
the default.

Please let me know if I'm performing the incorrect API query to get the desired
data or if I'm doing something else wrong. Thank you!
