yeah, this is true. the real work is in creating the "mapping" between the ALPS description format and any runtime message format (HTML, Cj, Siren, Atom, etc.).
It is easier to work up a mapping for HTML than for XML, but one could be done for XML or JSON. it would look quite different (e.g. based on convention mostly.).
so the sentence should proly be something like:
"An ALPS document can be applied to many existing media types as long as a mapping standard exists between ALPS and the target media type."
or something like that.

maybe "standard mapping" or "agreed mapping" etc. once we start doing that actually mapping documents, this will proly clear itself up
