I like the lockdown idea, if you want you can also do it with a smartwatch if you already have one.

please note if you want to use GPS module on esp8266 i think you need to write your own code in Arduino, whatever suits your team is fine. but you will also need integrate an MQTT client in your code, you may look that up i think many libraries are out there for it.

the opensource projects i shared to you before by email i dont think they work well with GPS. you can also try to search github for opensource esp8266 firmware projects that are compatible with MQTT and supports GPS.
