[x] convert to-be-frozen TypedDicts to NamedTuples or such
[x] reduce the use of the Self type
[ ] clean up the *.tools modules
[ ] delay imports whenever it is appropriate to do so
[ ] migrate to modifier events
[ ] distinguish options from modifiers (or, consider merging options into modifiers)
