...plus a couple small cleanup commits.

I needed something like this while converting OSM data to other geometry formats, and thought it would make sense to include in osmio.

What do you think?

I have published as v0.5.0-rc1, please feel free to try it out, and it it's OK, I'll publish it as a proper v0.5.0

Thanks! I've tested this change with some local data, and it works as I intended.

Whether you want to release this by itself or wait for #4, is up to you (let me know if you'd like to see any changes there).
