Did you reinstall MacTeX after installing Yosemite, or use Apple's installer to preserve it from your prior operating system? My understanding is that Apple's installer will occasionally cause problems like this, but I don't know the details off the top of my head.
I didn't reinstall it, as my installation of MacTeX was just a few days old. Unfortunately I cannot tell, which update(10.10 or 10.10.1) might have caused the problem, as I never used tlutility before. Had some problems with biber after updating to 10.10.1, so I tried to update MacTeX, which failed. But as I said, now it's working fine.
It may well be, that Apple's installer didn't copy all the files and directories properly.
I'm using tlutility 1.19 on Mac OS X 10.10.1. with TexLive 2014.
I had problems searching for updates.

I had to create the directory "backups" manually, now its running fine.
