I'm having a really hard time finding any useful apps on the GoogleTV. It
seems like most of what is there in the market when viewing from a GoogleTV
device is battery meters and barcode scanners which don't make sense on a TV.
There are apps that run fine on my phone that would make sense on the GoogleTV,
but when I manually install them through a samba share (since they don't show
in the market), I find they all require portrait screen rotation. HBO Go,
Showtime Anytime, and Max Go all fall into this category, because they require
portrait rotation for selecting what show to stream. When I run them they
sometimes pop up a dialog box saying the device does not support portrait
rotation, which you then click to kill the app (if the app doesn't just crash
immediately).
I would think it would be trivial for the GoogleTV to fake "rotation" of the TV
by adding scaling the image down and adding black bars to the left and right
side, which would still leave the UI screen resolution area much larger than on
most phones.
