Couldn't you just use the primary device account email for this purpose?

No, since same user may have multiple GTV devices under the same account; it is
important to be able to distinguish them from each other (say, for the remote
application, etc)

On my Sony Blu-ray GTV device (NSZ-GT1) (updated to 3.1) Under
"Settings-Network-Home Network Setup - Edit Device Name", you can change the
device name. The network name change correctly, I can see it from a PC machine
on the same network.
But, you are right on Google Play website when you try to install an app, It
does not specify the name you set to the device.
It will be interesting if on Google Play you can differentiate the devices by
name.

With the new YouTube feature to fling videos to Google TV devices from a mobile
device, all the Google TV devices are listed as "Google TV". There is no way to
distinguish which device is going to get the video. If the devices were named
by the user then the experience would be less frustrating.

Thank you for your interest in Google TV. The request for names on this issue
is spread across several product areas - mainly Play, YouTube and Android
Network Name. Unfortunately the Google TV team will not be able to address this
directly.
