It's pronounced "jif". But either way, it should be easy to present one.

Is gif pronounced with a soft g (as in general), or hard g (as in graphic)? Discuss. #1

Keep it civil. Obviously, it's pronounced with a soft g. Per Wikipedia:

Pronunciation of GIF A humorous image announcing the launch of a White House Tumblr suggests pronouncing GIF with the hard "G" sound. The creators of the format pronounced the word as "jif" with a soft "G" /dʒɪf/ as in "gin". Steve Wilhite says that the intended pronunciation deliberately echoes the American peanut butter brand Jif, and CompuServe employees would often say "Choosy developers choose GIF", spoofing this brand's television commercials.[10]

Respect the creators of the format, and pronounce it as they would have wanted.

FYI, the acronym stands for Graphics Interchange Format, not General Interchange Format.

Xaml is pronounced "zamel".

What about extensible? (As in XML, or XAML)

mattboehm commented 6 years ago

There is no rule that acronyms need to be pronounced like the letters in the words they come from. Other examples include the "U" in "SCUBA" or the "A" in "LASER". This is even true for the starting letters as in "ACORN".

What about regex for regular expressions, @lrz?

Checkmate.

Don't tell me you pronounce it rejex? :-)

amirrajan commented 6 years ago

Wait, it's not pronounced rejex? Perhaps we need to open another issue?

The image format is pronounced GIF, but an image using that format is pronounced GIF.

Well actually, it’s pronounced like “jive” and rhymes with “dive”

@dahlbyk :

confused

dahlbyk commented 6 years ago

It's quite simple. You save an image using JIF, which creates a GIF.
