What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. fetch friends that contain the all the friends of a user, which include
weird characters like ♥ or °
2. print out the size of the list

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
the expected output is the number of friends. but we see things like an
error with the JSON token.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
it's the 20081218 release
on windows XP
