OK, but can you give a one- or two-sentence explanation of how it ends up with the wrong mode?

Alright -- chasing that down lead to (as I suspect may have been slyly intended...) what seems to be a better place to put this particular fix; patch now updated with that change an explanation in the commit message.

Wasn't intended to be sly. I just thought the fix looked slightly funny and either deserved a comment or a cleanup :)
