[AMNH Birds SKIN-676019] Pica pica bottanensis - Location and Collector Details #60

Open paintedstork opened 6 years ago

paintedstork commented 6 years ago

I am curious to know if there is any information in this specimen on the details of the collector, or location (more specific) or any expedition details. As you would know this subspecies has been upgraded to a species and hence the increased interest in this specimen from India.

Written on the back of this skin's label is the note "Collected by L.A. Waddell" and what may be the initials "C.V." (perhaps Charles Vaurie?) There does not appear to be any additional locality data on the label. Waddell’s name is associated in our database with a dozen other skins collected in Tibet in 1904.

I don't seem to be able to post attachments here; if you provide me (trombone@amnh.org) with an email address I will send you the images of the labels.

Regards, Tom

Hi Tom,

Do you not have a note within the new comment area that says "Attach files by dragging & dropping, selecting them, or pasting from the clipboard."? The "selecting them" should be a link to a dialog box to choice files from your computer. If that option is not available to you, I would like to know.

Thanks, John

Samizdat2003 commented 6 years ago

Hi John,

Indeed I do see that note on GitHub. However, I did not see it earlier because I replied directly to the email message I’d received. (I read the note at the bottom of the message stating “You are receiving this because you are subscribed to this thread. Reply to this email directly, view it on GitHub, or mute the thread” and, me being me, I chose the easiest option, which was to simply hit Reply and attach the image to my new message, which apparently does not lead to the image being posted to GitHub.) Thanks for the heads-up; I’ll attach the relevant images on GitHub now.

Best, Tom

Thanks - if the date is 26 September 1904, which looks it is, Waddell was probably on his return from Tibet after this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_expedition_to_Tibet. Hence, most likely this place is in Tibet and not Sikkim.

thanks & best rgds Praveen

In addition, it appears from the specimen label that the correct spelling of the valley is "Tsangpo Valley", not Tsango as was recorded in our handwritten catalog (and hence in our database.) I'll correct the spelling in our database, and also note that this locality is likely in Tibet.

Thanks, Tom
