Encode switch bug and suggestion #120

Platform:
Mac OS X 10.6.4 

1. the bug. when i choese an encode, the main content show me the right words, 
but the side colume not effected. 

2. Can i select an encode(like UTF-8) as my default, instead of the "Default" 
setting

Please provide any additional information below.

language: simple chinese
ichm version: 1.4.1
