Message The advice against "more research is needed" and against what looks like the introduction to a literature review (acknowledging the work of prior researchers is really the opposite of professional narcissism!) seems wrong for academic writing. It's not narcissism to sound like a professional if you are one. As for Latin, et al. is Latin too. Is mutatis mutandis worse that c'est la vie or que sera sera? Maybe the advice should read: "Will your audience understand this?" or something more audience-centered--? (There's a book called They Say, I Say that lists the most common fixed expressions in academic writing. What's most common is seldom what's good, so I'm not sure it's a great resource for good writing, but I don't want to send mixed-messages to first-time college students, etc., who are also trying to learn what sounds normal.) Stuff to think about!

Message "is the preferred form" sounds to me like a nod to the fact that prescriptivism is dumb, BUT it also sounds kind of passive-aggressive and condescending. It's also not necessarily accurate, since a misspelling like "Chronicals" is not, to my knowledge, an alternative form that's used somewhere but which isn't preferred in proselint's context--it's just a mistakes that isn't recognized anywhere?. "conventional spelling"? "dictionary spelling"? Again, "shoe-in" seems to MEAN something different from "shoo-in", so it's more of a false etymology than an issue of which form do "we" (whoever "we" are) "prefer."

New message via "Contact widget"

Message The pop-up text for the phrasal adjective examples doesn't quite make sense. E.g.:

Hyphenate 'big-ticket item', a phrasal adjective, as 'big ticket item.'.

(1) 'Big-ticket item' is not a phrasal adjective; the phrasal adjective is 'big ticket'.

(2) The text actually tells the reader to remove the hyphen.

(3) Since you couldn't decide whether the period should go inside or outside the quotes, you put one in both places.

The big problem with phrasal adjectives is that people think that whether a phrase is a phrasal adjective is determined by the words in the phrase. It's not; it's determined by the context in which the phrase appears, namely, modifying another noun. So: "a real-time system", but "in real time".

I suggest explaining this in the pop-up text. A possible wording:

'Big ticket' is a phrasal adjective because it modifies 'item', so hyphenate it: 'big-ticket item'.

(Put the period inside the quote if you want -- I don't care -- just don't use two of them :-)

@Decagon Yes, good idea. We could also separate and sort these into separate issues (or merge them with existing issues).

Here are a few issues that I extracted but wasn't sure if I should make an issue for them:

The advice against "more research is needed" and against what looks like the introduction to a literature review (acknowledging the work of prior researchers is really the opposite of professional narcissism!) seems wrong for academic writing.

"is the preferred form" sounds to me like a nod to the fact that prescriptivism is dumb, BUT it also sounds kind of passive-aggressive and condescending.

The venery terms probably belong in the "narcissism" section...

Hyphenate 'big-ticket item', a phrasal adjective, as 'big ticket item.' (user says that it should not be in that form)
