slang abbreviations #68

The dfa workset seems to contain a significant number of slang abbreviations: ex.Lock'm up. Make'm work Gotta' keep 'em in their place, you know. So my qestion is this, should gov't turn to slaves to save money?

In the past we had a "friggin" and we kept it as such.

However, for this set, the annotators do not have a problem with going back to the full form (them, have got to, etc.) and since there are several of them, it might be useful to revert to the full form.

I agree to expand contractions such as gotta keep'em to got to keep them etc. just as we have been expanding more mainstream contractions such as can't, we'll, it's. I also agree that gov't should be treated like government which we then represent as government-organization that governs.

friggin is somewhat of an anomaly. Some of us (including me) originally annotated it as frigging (supported by well-respected dictionaries), but the majority voted for friggin (the "young and cool" people, I guess). As it turns out, in real data, friggin actually occurs far more often than frigging -- 5 times more often according to Google ngrams, so it looks like the "young and cool" people might have had a point.
