Throughout my research, I've seen quite a number of boards. There are different shapes, ranging from simple one-liners or one-columns to rhombi and rectangles. Those rectangles sometimes may contain irregularities, e.g. shorter border columns, a longer top row.
The shapes above can be of different sizes. The smallest thing I've seen was a three-section one-liner and the biggest one was probably a 12x10 rectangle.
Then there is the composition of boards. Some games are played on two boards, and those boards can be of different sizes and shapes. I do not remember seeing a three-board game, but I don't see why it can't be used to come up with an interesting game.
