looks like the CI failures might be related to conda 4.4 or perhaps a conda-build bug. I'll look into this soon. Unfortunately, there's no sense in merging this yet, as the image build will only proceed if tests pass.

test fails are due to conda 4.4. I'll look into a workaround.
