Safer, simpler, and better-documented python interface #18

The remaining bunch of changes for the release v2.1 that I'm preparing. Reduced the chance of segfaults. The examples are now checked on continuous integration as well.

Unless we spot something I will merge this tonight and release v2.1 from this point.
