I did it that way for personal reasons - namely, I wanted saved text files to be stuffed away somewhere I'd never see them unless I was looking for them. I don't save anything to the desktop except temporarily. I'm fussy like that.
One could add a 'setup' function (via a button) to handle stuff like this. Could also reset the start-up PIN, choose different encryption modes, etc.
You may also have noticed that you need to type in the .txt file extension manually, if you subsequently desire the program to open the file.
Currently, upon trying to save, the initial path is
/Users/Shared
. This is not intuitive for most people, who would expect something like~/Desktop
or~/Documents
.
