I didn't get much luck using external displays either. I'd love to hear from others who may have success though.
Heeey. I had luck using Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 LTS ! Nvidia Driver 381. Multiple Display works when Nvidia is active. I´m using Bumblebee too. Kernel 4.10.
What i also realized that the Switch with FN + F7 , has an effect on the hardware. It doesnt boot when i selected the dedicated graphics only mode.
This tutorial helped me: https://gist.github.com/whizzzkid/37c0d365f1c7aa555885d102ec61c048
@Sijoma how did you make the external monitor work ? I used prime-select nvidia, then I connected the HDMI and It can't detected!
I use bumblebee alongwith intel-virtual-output and it works out pretty well for me. I used the Arch Linux Bumblebee guide. When I need more performance, I drop the intel-virtual-output, start a second X11 server and use hotkeys to switch input devices between the two X servers.
@sayash intel-virtual-output is returning [no VIRTUAL outputs on ":0"] , I tried to follow this one here and still the same : https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/321151/do-not-manage-to-activate-hdmi-on-a-laptop-that-has-optimus-bumblebee
I tried with manjaro didn't work also, I am using ubuntu now but can't use external display
I used the link i provided. (https://gist.github.com/whizzzkid/37c0d365f1c7aa555885d102ec61c048) And i made sure that both cards are active with FN +F7 in windows. This has a permanent effect, also for other operating systems.
My steps for enabling external monitor:
Hey, your guide helped me to install ubuntu gnome. (errors booting and shutting down are gone)
I however cant get my External display to work though.
