Cant seem to find the ONS guidance on icons, @sylwiasajdakLCC would you know where to find this?

I haven't found any guidance, based on my experience best practice would be:

make sure the icons are large enough for people to navigate to comfortably (important for people with loss of motor control)
make sure the colour contrast between the states (default, on hover, on press and, if used, disabled) is at minimum 3:1. In this article https://blog.prototypr.io/designing-usable-and-accessible-buttons-dffb464d9be2 it suggests increasing brightness from default to on hover to on press.
when using a tooltip - make sure the text size is readable, ensure adequate contrast between the text and background
