Example updates following new API #2

This pull request (begins) updating the examples to follow the new API. This is a work-in-progress, but hoping that sequential updates will make reviewing easier.

This pull request may briefly go on hiatus while other API changes are implemented (primarily pdf being an optional argument, see #3 ).
