No surround audio on a surround system - regression in 1.19 compared to 1.19-rc6 #3477

Description

As the title says - there's no surround sound anymore in a surround system with discrete channels, no matter the state of "surround audio" setting in the game.

When enabling the 'surround audio' setting, the only change is HTRF filter being applied. The sound remains in stereo.

If the 'surround audio' is disabled - HTRF processing is disabled but the sound is still in stereo.

It was fine in rc6. With the 'surround audio' enabled, all the channels were in use, but with HTRF processing applied. With this setting disabled, the audio was still in surround but without HTRF processing.

No custom system-wide Soft OpenAL configs are being used.

However, if I replace the game's original 'OpenAL32.dll' with a proper router dll from the soft openal distribution so that the game would see native OpenAL devices, and then set such a device as a default output in game settings, the sound will be in surround.

Although, the compatibility with such a device is poor. Even though the sound is working fine, the game is experiencing short freezing every other minute. The log is spammed with the following: [Warning] OpenAL Error during setvolume(val) of sound game:sounds/weather/wind-leafy.ogg: InvalidValue The freezing was the same in 1.19-rc and earlier. So this last part is not strictly related to the issue being reported.

How to reproduce

  1. Set the Windows speaker config to a surround (5.1/7.1) configuration.
  2. Launch the game.
  3. Sound is in stereo, no matter the 'surround sound' setting.

Can confirm on Linux (Arch, manual installation) in version 1.19.6. I attach logs and alsoftrc file (added .txt extention in order to be able to upload. (Surround sound in other OpenAL applications including Minecraft works) client-main.txt client-debug.txt client-chat.txt client-audit.txt

Same issue here (Linux, PopOs!). I played before 1.19 (1.17 or 1.18 I think) and it used to work back then.

I generally setup my openal-soft config file with HRTF for Stereo (if I switch to headphones) and for my 5.1 surround system I use openal-softs surround51 *.ambdec format. (both settings work in e.g. minecraft).
