1.19.5 missing item/block, possibly the missing surface ruin block from 1.19.4? #3730

Description

Was having problems, initially with modded maps, where the game would stutter on world creation and then micro-freeze periodically after. Not every time, but fairly consistently when I spawned near ruins. Tried uninstalling all mods and reinstalling them one by one, and the problem at first seemed to be with BetterRuins. I uninstalled it, installed Just More Ruins instead, had the same problem. Uninstalled all ruins mods and everything worked fine, but when I installed the Structures Spawn Chance 300% mod, the problem returned. In one world before I started all this, I came across a ruin with a ? block, which made me think it could be BR causing the issue, except it was all ruins, even presumably vanilla ruins when I turned up the chance of them spawning enough to make it a problem. :)

What I'm seeing in my logs is a consistent "Cannot fix itemstack mapping, item/block id 1702 not found in old mapping list. Will delete stack. (Vintagestory.API.Common.Item)." I have no idea what that relates to (it may not have anything to do with ruins, in fact!) but it seems to be persistent even in a completely vanilla game. It will repeat itself in the logs more frequently the more I move around the map, as well. Could that be causing the problem? I saw there was a similar report recently for a 1.19.3 game with missing blocks, with the suggestion that 1.19.5 would fix the issue, so I updated my game...haven't found the block again where I can see it (need to figure out if there's a spectator/ghost mode for these things), but getting the same error message in my log as from 1.19.4. The stuttering ranges from very mild to huge annoyance to "crashed my game and created duplicate maps for the same world (1.19.4)," which was...odd, to say the least! (Edit: sorry, misremembered the version # as 1.9.5)

How to reproduce

I get this warning message nearly every time I make a vanilla world with these parameters:

Seed: 1900855217 ("hoopla" of all things...I like putting in random words!) Color Accurate Map Landform Scale 120% World Border: blocked Polar-Equator Distance: 10K

No other changes--spawn in, run around the area for maybe 60 seconds, quit the game, check server-main.text

This thread is reporting multiple, likely unrelated issues, which is difficult for us to deal with....

Freeze/stutter issues:

  1. Test without mods
  2. If you add mods, check that logs are basically clean The log you have posted is basically clean apart from the item 1702 issue, which is not serious enough to cause stutter. If a mod is causing errors to be spammed in the log files that will certainly cause in-game issues.
  3. In general, follow the guidance on the wiki in full and in detail. Especially if you have an Nvidia card, check the Nvidia section of that guide; and see also discussion of external causes including the Discord app

? blocks in ruins:

  1. Prior to game version 1.19.4 there were some known issues leading to ? blocks in ruins. Mainly an issue in cold regions, normally caused by the "rock-typing" system which attempts to adapt chiselled cobble blocks in ruins to the local type of stone, it's not an actual missing block, it's a messed up chiselled block. If you started your game map prior to 1.19.4, you could have some of these messed up ruins in regions generated in 1.19.3, for example. If it is still an issue in a (vanilla) world newly generated in 1.19.5-rc.1 or later, we want to know about it ... - there are some tools that can be used to get more info about the type of ruin. So far I am not aware of any confirmed reports of it happening in newly generated worlds. Older worlds might be fixable using the /wgen regen 0 command in a small local area, or perhaps /db prune but prune is buggy in 1.19.5-rc.1 (messes up translocators), I suggest wait for us to fix that.

Cannot fix itemstack mapping, item/block id 1702

  1. This issue most likely relates to there being an item in a chest or other storage, in a just-loaded chunk from the savegame, and that item has id 1702 which no longer exists in your current world. The game has a remapping system which can generally detect if the item exists with a different id (which is common). In this case, the likely reason is that you generated this part of the world previously with mods installed, one of those mods had item 1702 and placed it in chests or storage (e.g. in ruins or underground ruins) and now you removed the mod.
  2. If that covers your situation - i.e. you have added and removed mods and this savegame included a time when you had mods which are no longer enabled - then you can safely ignore this error. If it bothers you, regenerate the map in a small local region or look for and delete the storage blocks with these items, if you can figure out which ones they are.

Hello! Yes, so, I'm one of those weirdos who will start a hundred maps just to look for the perfect place to build. In my original vanilla game and my first modded game, I didn't have any trouble with stuttering, but I wanted a new start after I figured out the mechanics a bit, so I started loading up new worlds--that's when I started noticing the stutters, but not on every map. Once I hit a few "bad" worlds (this was probably about 20 maps in...I am That Person), I started unchecking mods with the mod manager, and eventually unchecked all mods other than the three base game mods (survival, creative, essential).

So if it helps:

  1. I just bought the game--I've never had a map that ran prior to the v1.19.4 patch. I did find the ? ruin block in a 1.19.4 modded game and only had Better Ruins installed (and the auto map marker and HUD clock, but I don't think either of those add any blocks).

  2. When I was testing world seed "hoopla," I was getting the missing 1702 consistently with all mods unchecked every time I started a new game with that seed, deleting the saves and maps between each test for a clean start. Well--I assumed it was clean with the mods unchecked and not loading, and restarting the game between mod changes, but if I should have removed them from the mods folder entirely, that's another story! But yes, after testing mods by using a lot of random worlds, I thought I had narrowed it down to ruins-based mods until I found a seed that gave me the 1702 consistently when a new vanilla game was begun. And it does usually plop a (small) ruin down right at the most typical spawn point, so still wondering if it's ruins-based. :) (Sorry, didn't intend to put multiple issues in one ticket; I just honestly thought they might have been related.)

  3. Moving on from that seed, I decided to stop testing and just play since the lag spikes are usually not bad--I probably wouldn't notice them most of the time except that I'm looking for them now. But because I'd gotten curious, I started closing the game every time I got a lag spike to check logs, and every time, it was the 1702 message. This is in 1.19.5 now, new game file from a fresh opening of the game, totally vanilla--that is, there are mods in the mod folder but not checked in the mod manager; if I need to delete them from the folder as well, I can try that next! Or just delete everything and reinstall the game. So yeah, the lag spikes are generally not terrible, but it's curious that it's happening with a fresh character/world even with no mods (which is another reason why I thought it might've been the wonky ruins block--still keeping an eye out for those in vanilla, by the way!).

Anyway, thanks so much--I hope my first communication being a bug report doesn't sound too critical, because I'm honestly really loving the game, to the tune of "staying up until 4 AM when I clock in at 7 or 8." I love how deep the crafting is, and what I've seen of the lore is delightfully creepy--my first book was "The Return," and wow, did that set a tone!

ETA: Deleted mods folder, reinstalled 1.19.5, started fresh copy of seed "hoopla" (no quotes, same parameters as above [world borders blocked etc]), because I noticed I was getting the 1702 error every time I found a new ruin. With no mods at all, if you start this seed in 1.19.5 and teleport to -406, 113, 318, there's a ruin there, and if you walk around it for a few seconds, you can quit the game, check server-main.txt and see the same error. Unless there's something else I've missed, it looks like there's something in the base game that's not really there? You'd mentioned containers, so maybe something in the cracked pots? In that ruin, there's a cracked pot (farming) and a collapsed chest.

Thanks, we'll investigate the 1702 error in more depth - if it's an issue in 1.19.5 vanilla, then for sure that is something we need to resolve. Thanks for the additional explanation, that is very helpful to rule out other possible causes.


I still think the 1702 issue is unlikely to cause lag spike. Lag spike is most commonly a GPU issue (especially if other GPU features such as VSync or G-Sync are also engaged, or if your game settings are on the high side relative to your hardware). Can also be a cooling issue (especially on laptops), a RAM memory issue (especially if the game is close to using 75% of more of available system memory), or an external cause (Discord app hardware acceleration 'feature'). Or other more obscure causes

The game if you are pushing it hard - e.g. running/flying across the map into new areas - inevitably has a very short lag spike at random intervals (usually less than once a minute) due to "garbage collection", and a brief pause every [5] minutes due to autosave. That 5 minutes autosave timer is configurable in servermagicnumbers.json, default is 300 seconds.
