Request for Adding Forward Proxy Functionality #74

Open ghotm opened 3 months ago

ghotm commented 3 months ago

Hello,

I would like to propose the addition of a forward proxy feature to our system. A forward proxy acts as an intermediary server between client devices and target servers, enhancing network security and privacy by hiding client device identities. It also enables efficient management of network traffic through filtering, monitoring, and logging of incoming requests.

Implementing a forward proxy would improve our system's capabilities in handling caching, load balancing, and access control. It would provide an additional layer of defense against unauthorized access attempts and enhance overall network performance.

I kindly request your consideration of this proposal for adding a forward proxy functionality to our system.

Thank you for your attention.

Best regards, JackCen

Hello @ghotm,

I feel this is a bit out of scope of this project. Do you mind explaining why you think Zen and its users might benefit from a multi-user/forward proxy mode?

1.Enhanced Privacy and Security: With a forward proxy mode, Zen users can route their internet traffic through intermediary servers, effectively concealing their IP addresses and encrypting their data. This added layer of privacy and security is particularly valuable for users who prioritize anonymity and protection against surveillance or data interception.

2.Access to Restricted Content: In regions where certain websites or online services are restricted or censored, a forward proxy can help Zen users bypass these restrictions by accessing content through servers located in unrestricted regions. This capability empowers users to freely access information and resources that may otherwise be inaccessible due to geopolitical or regulatory barriers.

3.Improved Performance and Reliability: By caching frequently accessed resources and optimizing network traffic, a forward proxy can enhance the speed and reliability of internet connections for Zen users. This is especially beneficial in environments with limited bandwidth or unreliable network infrastructure, where proxy servers can mitigate latency and buffering issues.

4.Collaborative Workspaces: In scenarios where multiple users within an organization or team utilize Zen for collaborative work, a multi-user mode with forward proxy support can streamline access to shared resources and facilitate secure communication channels. This enables seamless collaboration and information sharing while maintaining privacy and security protocols.

5.Compliance and Governance: For businesses and institutions that require stringent compliance with data protection regulations or internal governance policies, a multi-user/forward proxy mode offers centralized control and monitoring of internet usage. Administrators can implement access controls, content filtering, and auditing mechanisms to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and organizational guidelines.

This is merely a proposal, as I am currently facing the issue mentioned in the second point. However, since Zen does not support forward proxying, I find myself compelled to stop using Zen.
