Actually "rank" can be several things :D

things like badges in foursquare, stackoverflow, ...
like karma in plurk
or simply as in contributor, moderator, admin, etc

"rank" in this issue is closer to the first two, something to reward contributions. Not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing.

could be both :D I think it would be highly dependent on what will the 'rank' be based on

for example, if it is based on route contribution(s), it will encourage people to contribute more because of the euh... artificial reward(s) involved, but it also may lead to 'lower quality, higher quantity' contributions xD
