F2 Keystroke does not work #101

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
To use the replace feature, I have to Right-click and replace. I cannot use the
F2 key on my keyboard, which, as far as I know if a fully functioning key.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect F2 key to replace characters.
When I hit F2, nothing happens.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
0.13.3

Please provide any additional information below.

Thanks for any insight...I'm a big keyboard user...only use mouse when
necessary, so it's bothersome.

This is strange. The other shortcut, Shift+F2, stopped to work in Firefox 15 or
so because of the developer toolbar, but there hasn't been any report of F2
alone. In the next version the shortcuts are changed to solve that problem, so
I don't know if that will fix your problem too.

You can try a beta version of the next release if you want by going to the
bottom of the page at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/foxreplace/ and
inside "Development Channel". If you want to try it, make sure first of doing a
backup of your substitution list, just in case that you find a big bug and want
to return to the stable version.

I'm using Firefox 18.0.1 and the shift-F8 doesn't work. The only way to
substitute is using the menu option with the mouse. I am using an Apple's "USB
keyboard with numeric keypad".

And F8 alone to show the replace bar works?

Can the hotkey be a customizable option. Changeable in preferences (FoxReplace
options). F8 conflicts with other apps.

You can customize the hotkey with this addon:

Why did it change it from F2 to ShiftF8? Even ShiftF2 would be more ergonomic.
Not that F@ has been reassigned to anything else. Can't we please just have F2
back?

I have a unix "tailing" log page for which auto-replace does not work so I now
have to use this awkward combination each time :(

As already stated, I had to change Shift+F2 because it was taken over by the
developer toolbar in Firefox 15 (now free again in Firefox 20). For consistency
I decided to also change F2, so that both actions use the same F key.

Since I was changing the keys I took also the chance to change which one is
just a single F key and which a combination. I thought it would be better if
the single key option, which could be hit by accident, was to show the replace
bar, because it's harmless, and the combination, harder to hit by accident,
could be used to apply the substitution list, which changes content. I
seriously think that this is better. For example, this avoids a problem I
suffered often in Google Spreadsheets, where F2 is used to edit a cell and I
often applied a substitution unintendedly.

Sorry, but I don't plan to change it back to the old shortcuts, although I can
consider to change back from F8 to F2 with the new logic, i.e. no shift to show
the replace bar, shift to apply substitutions, i.e. reversed from the old
shortcuts. The problem I see with this is that it could cause even more
confusion. But anyways first I should wait until Firefox 20 comes out of beta.

But, as I told to the others, if you think F2 or Shift+F2 is better you can
change the keys with Customizable Shortcuts.

Closing as invalid because the user hasn't responded anymore. Assuming the
problem disappeared in the update.
