What is SIP Trunking? Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking is the digital method of making and receiving phone calls and other digital communication over an internet connection. The term trunk in SIP trunking refers to virtual phone lines that you can use to make phone calls over the internet to anyone with a phone number. SIP trunks not only carry voice calls, they can also be used for multimedia communication that combines voice, video and messaging services. SIP trunks are replacing analogue and ISDN phone lines, with many countries now scheduling in the termination of ISDN services.

Analog telephone lines will be obsolete by 2025 and those business communication systems that haven't already, will switch to internet and mobile interfaces. While many business owners don't necessarily know all the technical aspects of enterprise communications, understanding Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology will help to streamline an organization's unified communications system.

As an essentially 20th century technology, the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is all but obsolete, as it no longer meets the demands of 21st century business and unified communications.

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is one of the digital standards that uses the PSTN network, and while it was widely adopted by large enterprises over analog services, it too is now largely inadequate.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is a cloud based technology that allows you to make voice calls using a broadband internet connection instead of a regular analog phone lines. It allows huge amounts of data traffic and call volume, and IP phones are cost effective for large or small businesses.

A trunk is essentially just another name for a phone line. SIP is just one of the possible protocols used for VoIP connectivity, and provides a way to convert voice signals into data that can be decoded by devices used by a caller.

Trunks refer to the groups of cabling that would link traditional phone systems from one local telephone exchange to another. With the internet, this process became virtual. A trunk is now a collection of assigned 'channels', which can each handle a set number of calls simultaneously.

What is SIP Calling? SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) trunking refers to phone calls that are routed over the Internet rather than traditional phone lines. SIP calling, therefore, refers to the act of placing calls via a SIP trunk. Because SIP calls take place across the Internet, they tend to be cheaper and more efficient than calls placed through traditional phone systems.

Physical connections to a phone company are eliminated with the use of a SIP trunk. Using SIP trunks, a SIP provider can connect multiple channels to your private branch exchange (PBX) system, allowing you to instantly provision global voice connectivity for your Voice-over-IP (VoIP) infrastructure.
