HOW TO THINK BETTER

The world is complex and interconnected, and we need to understand the big ideas from big disciplines, in order to have a whole map of the reality to be able to make better decisions.

Critical thinking has to be based on going to the fundamental ideas, to the mental models.

Mental models are the most important ideas of each science: philosophy, mathematics, physics, statistics, engineering, chemistry, biology, psychology, economics and history.

You need to know and connect them.

The first rule is that you can't really know anything if you just remember isolated facts and try and bang 'em back. If the facts don't hang together on a latticework of theory, you don't have them in a usable form. — Charlie Munger

The things best to know are first principles and causes, but these things are perhaps the most difficult for men to grasp, for they are farthest removed from the senses. —Aristotle

These models do not tell you what you think, rather they teach you how to think, and encourage you to think critically.

Here are some examples of how mental models will improve your life: • Do you want to create a successful business? Leverage, Niches and Scale models will guide you.

• Do you want to be happy, achieve more and suffer less? Stoicism, Anti-fragility and Resilience give you the vision and strength you need.

• Do you want to know why you shouldn't believe what you see on Instagram? Plato's Cave metaphor will give you the answer.

• Do you want to boost your professional career? Take a look at the Incentives mental model.

• Do you want to make rational decisions? The 25 biases that Charlie Munger details in Psychology of Human Misjudgment will help you.

Thinking in a multidisciplinary way.

People often view “thinking” as separate from “feeling,” but this infographic, “How to think better, and help others think better too” shows how a holistic approach – one that takes into account our emotions, bodies, physical environment, and relationship to time – can significantly sharpen us intellectually, improve our cognitive capacities, , and facilitate creativity, innovation, and success. I especially like the 5th and 7th items here: that eliminating competition improves our thinking, and that laughter helps thinking, too! Who knew that cooperation and joy could make us better thinkers?
