current design is overly complex and coupled, and can't express ids with any kind of structure (even all/none)

I believe the new id format is better and I can safely close this issue

what new id format? it doesn't look to me like anything's changed recently. as far as i can tell all of the things i didn't like about ids last time i looked at them are still here (too complicated, not general enough, no compositional ids)
