German scharfes s (ß) in headerbox #45

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Put the character ß (German scharfes s) inside \headerbox, e.g.:

\headerbox{Große Koalition}

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect Große Koalition
I get Grosse Koalition

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
TeX 3.1415926 (TeX Live 2009/Debian) on Ubuntu 12.04 using the Kile editor.
Latest version of baposter (29 September 2011).

Please provide any additional information below.
The rendering of ß in other parts of the document is correct, I only get the
double s in \headerbox (see screen shot). I'm using the following language
packages:

\usepackage[german]{babel}
\usepackage[utf8x]{inputenc}

I've got textlive-lang-german installed. I also tried alternative commands like
\ss{} and "se with no success.

If this is not a bug, I would be grateful if you can let me know how to
correctly display the scharfes s inside \headerbox

This is not a bug, it's correct behavior. The header is set in small caps,
which uses capitals, and thus the 'ß' needs to be transferred into a double S.
See "Amtliche Regelung der deutschen Rechtschreibung", §25 (E3):
http://rechtschreibrat.ids-mannheim.de/download/regeln2006.pdf
Also see:

9F_durch_SS

(Note: A capital ß has been introduced to unicode in 2008. However, mmost
fonts do not include this glyph yet, and also, it is not yet part of the
orthographic standard)
