Event notification: IP address error

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Set up a notification to alert when user uploads a file (add IP as one of the 
details)
2.Retrieve file from URL

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected: notification should be sent, and should contain the IP address of the 
user's machine.
Actual: notification is sent, but IP is not retrieved simply displays (%ip%)

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.8.4.4

Please provide any additional information below.
Also when a file is uploaded using PublicUpload, no information is retrieved. 
If possible, the PublicUpload link should be used as username (perhaps this 
could be implemented in the new public sharing feature?)
