When using nginx (alone or as a reverse proxy for apache), you must set 
Content-length header for json responses. Without this, responses above some 
size limit will be prefixed with a hex number (the length of the json encoded 
string) and suffixed with a zero ("0"). This is because nginx treats the 
response as chunked and adds the Transfer-Encoding: chuncked header to it.
