I'd like to cut a release prior to Tuesday's 9.0.0rc1, at least containing the validate-tags fix and the byte-compilation test. @felixfontein, what do you think?

I agree. Would be nice to also get #554 in. Let's see whether there is some feedback on Monday and do a release on Monday evening maybe?
