When I run: $ resume export myresume.html --theme light

I get this error: Invalid --theme flag: light

How do I use the light theme?

Right now, it is not possible to use external theme from the command line. I think this will be implemented in the next version.

What you can do is publish your resume on jsonresume. You can then try out the different themes by adding : ?theme=lightat the end of your URL (for instance : http://registry.jsonresume.org/thomasdavis?theme=light).
