Clarification on Android Install #58

Open jonfen opened 3 years ago

https://www.opendyslexic.org/download/ states:

Android

To override the font used everywhere:
    You can download the OpenDyslexic CM theme from here: https://gumroad.com/l/OpenDyslexic

But that link doesn't seem to provide any links to Google Play.

@antijingoist am I missing something?

I second that more detailed Android installation instructions would be very helpful! My fiancee is dyslexic and uses android tablets extensively for her work, and it would be very helpful for her to have access to this font.

Someone has created apks of the monotype 2 and 3 fonts here: https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS8/comments/7mv747/how_to_instal_dyslexic_font_on_s8/

It looks like the "CM" abbreviation refers to CyanogenMod, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CyanogenMod which is now LineageOS. If this is the case, then the font is certainly not easily accessible to the common dyslexic Android user. I think the .apk route is feasible. If not through Google Play, then perhaps through something like F-Droid: https://f-droid.org/en/

Or even via apps already available via Google Play, such as iFont: https://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/how-to-install-fonts-on-android/

So, IF "CM theme" refers to CyanogenMod, then I think a better bug report would be to explore alternative ways to make OpenDyslexic available to the average Android user, such as:

  1. Package the font directly in Google Play?
  2. Package the font directly in F-Droid?
  3. Create Android-specific font downloads for manual install via readily available 3rd party apps like iFont?
