Feature request - Signal Strength #43

I am a student pilot in the US.Thanks for developing dump1090. Out here there is a lot of Mode C traffic, which means that they do not transmit their GPS co-ordinates. So I see a lot of airplanes but I do not know where they are. I was wondering if you could add a signal strength parameter?

This way one could approximate the distance of the aircraft based on the signal strength. There are commercial products which work in a similar manner (eg: zaon mrx).

Thank you.

Where do you want to have the signal strength shown? I know this was added to the MalcombRobb fork, but sadly I dont think it gives you as good an idea as you think. (At least for me.)

Sorry for the delay in replying to your message. I would prefer it be on the --interactive page.

I will checkout the fork you mentioned and see how it is implemented. I will be going up on a flight early January with an instructor and I will try and see if I can spot any airplanes. He may have a Xaon MRX with him, so I can see how this matches up.

Hey, I am also a pilot and would also appreciate this signal strength feature. I could also help tuning it to the Zaon MRX's ranging scale. Unfortunately Zaon ceased operation so I think we could create a cheap alternative (including ADS-B traffic) here.

Planes transmitting in Mode C usually have ACARS transmitters as well and do not wish to duplicate the location data unnecessarily. This could be resolved if we could decode ACARS simultaneous to ADS-B and merge the data.
