Removed need for package 'future'

Thanks for the contribution - the changes look good to me, I merged them with a minor change (removed need for future package). I cannot verify the corrected error handling in 'run' but trust that it works ok, If you have further changes for python 3 compatibility, feel free to add them - I will try to check them out sooner then this time (the owner of this package is not active at the moment).
