Could "fanbrögðum" be a subject here, or should I treat it as a direct object?

"Hleypur hann þá að Belíus með svo miklu afli að hann hörfaði undan mjög til falls og tókust fangbrögðum"

I think this is NP-ADT; then the sentence has a pro-subject (= hann + Belíus). The meaning, I think, is: 'They fought with "fangbrögð"'
