Various contributions, previously individual pull requests, now rebased and combined into a single pull request.

I was going to log an issue but it looks as if github issues are not enabled. Do you intend people to log issues on github or on Apache JIRA? If so, what's the project name?

The issue is that the "news items" are not exposed in the site. Note that there are 3 news items: 2 for releases, 1 for new committers. The release news items drive the table of releases in http://localhost:4000/download.html but all 3 news items should appear in the site as news items as well. See, for example, how http://calcite.hydromatic.net/news/ contains a mixture of news items - releases, talks, new committers, etc.
