Facing build issue after updating to cordova-android 12 #1680

I have updated the cordova-android to the latest version and then also updated the targetSDKVersion to 33. But after all that when I run the command ionic cordova build android I get this splash tag related error.

It's strange but I'd start by cleaning your project...

You have several configurations and plugins that is old and obsolete and it could be interfering with things.

cordova-plugin-google-services for example declares support up to cordova-android@9, and cordova-android platform have core support for google services. See AndroidGradlePluginGoogleServicesVersion and AndroidGradlePluginGoogleServicesEnabled preferences in the docs. So the plugin might be able to be removed altogether. If you have another plugin that depends on it, that plugin may need updates accordingly.

As of cordova-android@11, it implements the standard android splashscreens, there's more information here.

Effectively, the old <splash> tags aren't supported for android anymore because the standard android splashscreen doesn't support a full screen image, rather you can only specify a single asset that is about the size of an app icon.

The splash screen icon must be an image that must be 240×240 dp and fit within a circle 160 dp in diameter. Alternatively you can supply a PNG file, just x4 the dimensions, otherwise the icon may look pixelated/blurred on xxxhpdi devices.

Assuming that you're using the latest cordova-android version, line 392 on prepare.js leads to: https://github.com/apache/cordova-android/blob/rel/12.0.1/lib/prepare.js#L392

It's attempting to configure the splashscreen theme inside themes.xml. In a standard cordova project the themes.xml will be configured to extend android's splashscreen theme, a requirement to properly support the android splashscreen system and the theme will be named Theme.App.SplashScreen.

If you don't have a theme named Theme.App.SplashScreen then I guess it will fail.

I don't really have enough information to know your intent but the main app theme must be a splashscreen theme, otherwise splashscreen will not work properly and will fail during runtime.

If you want to override/set the app theme, that theme should be specified using the AndroidPostSplashScreenTheme preference. The theme specified here will be used once the splashscreen is dismissed.

If a plugin or framework is defining a custom theme, then it should define that theme in another resource file other than themes.xml to avoid overriding the cordova theme for splashscreen support.

Odd, it should be at <cordova-project>/platforms/android/app/src/main/res/values/themes.xml

I'd try removing and re-adding the cordova-android platform. Check to see if the file appears as expected.

If it fails, then I'd try replicating the issue in a sample reproduction app. I'd probably first try creating a new cordova project without ionic, confirm the file existence. This establishes our baseline. If it doesn't appear as expected, then try running cordova prepare android then confirm if the file appears as expected. If it still doesn't appear then let me know. If the themes.xml file exist as expected then read on.

If it does work with a basic cordova app, then try a basic ionic project. If it fails here, then ionic is likely doing something that is conflicting with Cordova and I can't really provide much pointers on what you can do. At this point you'd probably be in better hands asking the ionic community.

If it does work in a basic ionic project as well then that suggest the ionic framework at its core isn't the blame. I'd continue adding plugins in a vanilla cordova project (not using ionic) until it fails.
