It is not strictly true that emeritus members can be automatically restored at the next election. 1) they must be re-elected 2) they must re-apply within 30 days Neither of those is 100% guaranteed to occur

Line 461 does not claim that "emeritus members can be automatically restored at the next election".

The text of line 461: Members may choose to move to emeritus status by sending an email to secretary@apache.org, attaching a signed copy of the emeritus request. They can subsequently submit a new membership application at any time, by notifying secretary@apache.org. This will result in their being added to the next new member election.

All of this is true. But there is no corresponding tooling in Whimsy to support this. And to my knowledge, no Emeritus member has ever tried to use this process.

Bylaws: Section 4.5.Reinstatement of Membership of Emeritus Members. Upon receipt of a written request and a new membership application from an emeritus member and upon an affirmative vote of a majority of the members of the corporation approving such membership application, such emeritus member membership shall be reinstated as a full member of the corporation, and shall be entitled to exercise all rights as a member of the corporation, including all related voting rights.

So, current practice by Secretary: An Emeritus member requests reinstatement but does not submit a new application. Secretary adds the Emeritus member to the vote for new members. If approved, Someone needs to contact the newly-reinstated Emeritus member to submit a new membership application.

I'd suggest the way to resolve this is to change Secretary procedure to request a new membership application prior to updating the vote in the next member election.

Oops, I think I mis-interpreted the line as “added AT the next member election”.

But I think that shows the paragraph is at least incomplete, if not actually misleading.

My concern is how the paragraph comes across to readers.

Whilst changes to Whimsy etc. may help in streamlining the process, they are orthogonal, and need to be taken elsewhere. They don’t affect how the paragraph comes across to readers, which is my concern.

I suggest:

"This will result in their being included in the next new member election".

i.e. avoid using the word 'added' which has two possible meanings in this context.
