Have you considered complying to the XDG Base Directory Specification?

Since code (or was that pictures) tell more than thousand words I attach a
patch to show what I'm talking about. (The code is only to give an idea,
and more work is required).

It is annoying with all the .<somthing> dirs in the home folder (personal
opinion).

This is a duplicate of issue #137.  I agree it's a good idea; eventually I'll
implement it, at least before v1.6.
