A company I work for still uses some old servers with php 5.3 (I know it's not supported yet) so I patched your lib in order to be able to use it on one of these servers. The changes were trivial and I don't see any major drawbacks to support php 5.3 as well. Though I see that unit tests are not complete and I haven't tried all the functionality by myself yet.
